Route dossier
Keep the route visual before reading the mechanics.
Country context, document questions, source trail, and brief handoff stay visible before the dense rule sections begin.

Route context
Keep Japan context visible while reading Highly Skilled Professional as a route file, not a standalone promise.

Evidence file
Separate income, sponsor, capital, family, timing, and renewal evidence before interpreting the route.

Source trail
moj.go.jp anchors the route facts, while field-level source notes stay available for review.

Brief handoff
Carry official isa fee baseline and open questions into a profile-specific prep report.
Profile review depends on sponsor quality, employer continuity, and route-specific labor-market conditions.
Average total cycle based on current pack assumptions, not a service-time promise.
80+ points supports the one-year PR fast track; 70+ points supports the three-year fast track.
The surrounding country pack tracks a 5-year citizenship horizon.
Pathway briefing board
Use the route page to prepare a cleaner research brief.
This page should help you separate stable public route facts from profile-dependent assumptions before you spend time optimizing for the wrong pathway.
Start with the official route rule, then mark what still depends on the applicant.
67 pathway fields are organized around moj.go.jp, so the page can support source reading without turning the route into a personal conclusion.
Organize evidence by category before interpreting strength.
Use this route profile to prepare income, sponsor, capital, family, timing, and renewal facts as separate lanes instead of treating the pathway summary as a filing plan.
Keep fees, timing, and status horizon in the same brief.
Official ISA Fee Baseline is tracked at ¥6,000, with adjacent costs kept separate from profile evidence. Japan planning should also preserve renewal and long-term residence questions for a professional conversation.
Base Requirements
Profile Evidence
Typical baseline: Bachelor education, 3+ years of relevant experience, and applicant age usually within 18-39.
Language or Communication Threshold
JLPT or equivalent scoring support: No universal minimum, language improves points.
Employer or Offer Dependency
A route-aligned employer, job offer, or comparable sponsor structure is a core gating requirement.
Passport or identity document
Use the current passport or identity document to anchor names, expiry dates, family links, and travel history questions.
Route-specific document
Verify this route-specific document against the official checklist before treating the file as complete.
Process & Mechanics
Step 1
Initial route setup and evidence preparation • Typical duration 4-24 weeks.
Step 2
Employer, sponsor, or nomination processing • Typical duration 4-8 weeks.
Step 3
Adjudication, compliance checks, and next-step readiness • Typical duration 1-4 weeks.
Highly Skilled Professional points system
Highly Skilled Professional status uses a points table; 70+ points qualifies for HSP preferential treatment, while 80+ points supports the one-year permanent-residence fast track. Lowest invited CRS in that round: 70. Recheck the official rounds page before relying on any CRS number.
HSP Fast-Track PR
Japan's HSP points system starts at 70 points; 80+ points can support PR after 12 months, while 70+ points supports the 3-year track. HSP(i) is granted for 5 years, and HSP(ii) generally opens after 3 years of HSP(i) activity.
HSP II Privileges
After the HSP(i) track matures, HSP II materially loosens the route. The period of stay becomes unlimited. Holders can engage in the HSP(i) activity and, together with it, almost all work-authorized activities. The spouse-work, parent-accompaniment, and domestic-worker preferential treatment continues in this HSP II lane.
Priority Processing Target
ISA's preferential-processing target for highly skilled foreign professionals is about 10 days for COE applications and about 5 days for change-of-status or extension applications, although incomplete evidence or specialist review can still push cases beyond that target.
COE Validity Chain
Even with HSP priority handling, most new-entry cases still run through the COE chain. The current COE is valid for 3 months, and ISA has allowed email receipt since 2023-03-17, so visa issuance and landing should be sequenced against that expiry clock rather than treated as loose aftercare.
PR Score Timing
Japan's HSP permanent-residence fast track is not only about today's score. ISA's PR route still checks the score at the PR application point and, where relevant, at the point 1 year earlier for the 80+ lane or 3 years earlier for the 70+ lane, so applicants should preserve evidence for the historical score position rather than relying only on a current recalculation.
J-Skip Fast Lane
J-Skip is a separate Special Highly Skilled Professional gate within HSP: academic or technical applicants can qualify with a master's-or-higher profile or 10+ years of relevant experience plus JPY 20,000,000 annual income; management applicants need 5+ years and JPY 40,000,000. J-Skip can open HSP(ii) after 1 year, and online application support is tracked from 2026-01.
Conditional Family Benefits
HSP family advantages are still conditional rather than blanket. ISA's parent-accompaniment route is tied to projected household income of at least JPY 8,000,000, care of a child under 7, or support during pregnancy; the domestic-worker lane also keeps specific household-circumstances or prior-employment gates, including 1+ year of pre-entry employment for the accompanied-worker route and a child-under-13 household route in Japan.
Evidence Workbench
Passport or identity document
Use the current passport or identity document to anchor names, expiry dates, family links, and travel history questions.
Route-specific document
Verify this route-specific document against the official checklist before treating the file as complete.
Income proof
Show the remote-work relationship, foreign employer or client, contract term, and permission to work from abroad.
Education or credential records
Separate degree records from credential assessment status so missing ECA or equivalency work is obvious.
